Floss Threaders

Description

A Floss Threader is a flexible, needle-like device made of thin, medical-grade plastic or nylon. It acts as a guide to help dental floss pass through tight spaces or under fixed oral appliances. It functions similarly to a needle threader used in sewing, allowing the user to “loop” the floss through the eye of the threader and pull it behind or under obstructions that cannot be bypassed from the top.

Key Features

  • Flexible & Slender Tip: The pointed (but blunt) end is designed to be firm enough to slide through narrow gaps but flexible enough to navigate the contours of the mouth safely.
  • Large Loop (Eye): Features a generous opening that accommodates various types of dental floss, including waxed, unwaxed, or dental tape.
  • Smooth Surface: Usually coated or polished to ensure it slides comfortably against gum tissue and dental materials without causing irritation or snagging.
  • Disposable Design: Typically intended for single-use to ensure hygiene, though some professional versions are made of more durable, autoclavable materials.
  • High Visibility: Often produced in bright colors (like blue or white) to make them easy for patients to see and handle in the mirror.

Usage

  • Orthodontic Care: Essential for patients with braces to thread floss behind the archwire to clean between teeth and near the gumline.
  • Fixed Bridges: Used to clean the area under a “pontic” (the artificial tooth in a bridge) where food particles and plaque commonly accumulate.
  • Permanent Retainers: Allows patients with lingual wires (fixed retainers) to floss between the teeth that are bonded together.
  • Dental Implants: Helps in cleaning around the base of implant-supported crowns or multi-unit bridges.
  • Patient Education: Serves as a primary teaching tool for dental hygienists to demonstrate to patients that having fixed dental work does not exempt them from interdental cleaning.
